Creating an Outdoor Living Space
As the heat of summer begins to fade, and cool, crisp fall nights move in, the beauty of the outdoors can be more appreciated. By creating an outdoor living area, not only do you get a great space for grilling, and entertaining, you also provide the backdrop for countless memories. Whether it’s roasting marshmallows around the fire pit, or grilling a magnificent meal for your loved ones, being outside adds another dimension.
The trick to creating an outdoor living area is to balance nature with the comforts of home. One of the easiest ways to do this is by creating a deck or patio area. This provides a flat surface that is easy to maintain. When deciding the location of your deck or patio, think about what you want to use the space for, and what kind of space is already available. If you plan on doing a lot of grilling, you will want your outdoor space to have easy access to the kitchen. Use your home’s layout to your advantage. Another consideration to think about when creating your outdoor living space is protection. Are you going to use your space when it is raining? Are there lots of bugs that you’d like to avoid when outside? How does the sun fall on the space you are using? Do you like lots of sunlight or do you want shade to be available? Answering these questions will help you to determine if you just want a deck or patio, or if you want to add on to make the space more enclosed, like a screened in porch. Once you have selected one or two spaces for your outdoor area, pay attention. Go out to the space during different times of the day to see for yourself how bugs and sunlight affect these areas. You should be able to enjoy your outdoor living space whenever you want, not just sometimes. If you do have concerns, let us know. Once you have selected the space and mapped out the perimeter of your deck or patio, it’s time to start thinking about what you will have in your space. Is it primarily for grilling? If so, you may want to consider having your grill flanked with built in countertops, a sink, and a small fridge. Provide plenty of seating with built-in benches. How do you plan on providing lighting to the area? String lights can be very beautiful but you may want to rely on something more sturdy, and Bayshore can help you there.
When deciding which types of furniture you will have in your outdoor space, think of three things - function, mobility, and comfort. In order for your outdoor furniture to last, you need materials that are durable enough to stand up to the great outdoors. Things should be able to withstand water, humidity, and sunlight. Choose sturdy furniture with removable cushions. This way you can remove the cushions when the space is not being used and store them in a dry space, not in direct sunlight. This will extend the lifespan of the cushions and keep them looking bright. Built in cubbies can be an easy fix for cushion storage. Adding a few plants to the space can also make you feel closer to nature. There are many bug-repelling plants that are easy to care for that you could add to your deck or patio, while adding a fresh scent to the space.
Creating an outdoor living area can be a challenge, but once complete, imagine how relaxing it will be to grab a drink, put your feet up, and relax to the sound of nature. Most spaces in our homes have a function - a place to eat, a place to sleep, a place to shower. It is important for us to provide ourselves spaces to relax, unwind, and unplug. Why not have a vacation space, right in your own backyard? At Bayshore, we are here to help you create the space of your dreams.
